So the fewer calories that were eaten, the less long the minds live.
Right.
So there's no signature whatsoever of caloric restriction prolonging life.
So to get them to prolong their lives or to extend the life of the mouse, you had to put it onto a diet that had low protein and that needed to be coupled with high carbohydrate.
In this experiment they were confined to a single diet.
As you diluted protein in the diet, they increased their consumption of food in an effort to stabilize their protein intake.
mouse was the same.
Now we had shown in earlier studies with mice and we've shown this in numerous different animals.
that if you give them a choice of foods which contain differing ratios of protein and carbohydrate,
then they will with exquisite nutritional wisdom, they'll balance their intake of the two or more foods that you provide them to attain a fixed proportion and amount of protein and carbohydrate in their diet.
So they have this nutritional wisdom if you allow them that opportunity in mouse
will ingest a diet that contains about twenty to twenty three percent protein, about fifty five percent carbohydrates and the rest of its calories will come as fat.
And it will defend that in the face of things that you do to it as an experimenter by f messing around with the pairings of diets that you give it.
Now if you map that self selected nutrient intake onto our response from this
huge study, then a self selecting free range laboratory mouse would attain a diet which would lead to it being long lived and having a healthy metabolic state.
So they're choosing a diet that
You're exactly right and on both fronts.
One is that we shouldn't try and extrapolate too far.
But secondly, if you take those data that exists
there's actually striking concordance between findings from humans and these studies.
