And what we can now do is to take those data that we do have from humans
And see to what extent there is concordance.
Now certain of the features of these data are certainly found in humans.
So one of the things that we found strikingly in mice is that if you dilute protein in the diet, then the mouse will increase its total food and hence energy intake.
Now that
Particularly marked in our study if you diluted protein with fat.
It was less marked when you diluted protein with carbohydrate because carbohydrate itself provides when eaten in excess quantities negative feedback onto further feeding behaviour.
In other words, it suppresses appetite.
Whereas when you, as a mouse, are increasing your consumption to gain limiting protein, if you're eating large quantities of fat at the same time, that seems to be providing very little inhibition of further food intake.
Now we've found that signature also in our studies with humans.
And you see that very strongly.
When you dilute protein, humans eat more.
And when you look at population survey data, you see that they will tend to overconsume total energy more on a low protein, high fat diet than on a low protein, high carb diet.
So that accords with the mass studies.
There's also growing evidence looking across population level data and survey data that humans don't perform terribly well in terms of metabolic health on a high protein, low carbohydrate diet.
In fact there was a a companion paper on the same issue of cell metabolism as ours, which
really quite strongly supported that contention and recent review articles where they've taken all of the human survey data that there are and some of the clinical trials that have been done, you start to see the same pattern emerging across populations.
Now of course we've put ourselves
in recent years on a massive experimental regime, particularly in the Western world, by following particular fad diets, many of which are high in protein
and low in carbohydrators that may not all go well.
