She said,

Our father passed away last year and Darren and I spoke at his funeral.

And one of the things that Darren said about my father was actually something that I would say about Darren.

Darren said Dad was never above, never below, always alongside.

And I think that sums up Darren in terms of who he is as a person.

Are you able to talk to us about what that saying means to you?

Maria also spoke about your incredible parents, Jim and Nairie, both teachers, both sporty, who gave you and her every opportunity to play sport, try things, explore things.

And she says it's only now looking back that she can see how much of who you are comes directly from them and that you're both incredibly grateful for it.

But can you tell us more about Jim and Nairie?

What's the most important thing that they gave you in your childhood and upbringing?

Maria said that sport was a big part of your upbringing.

And she sort of said there was a formative patch where you were hockey.

You made like the New Zealand under-19 hockey team at 16.

And then it was perhaps a bit early and then you kind of didn't make it the next year.

And she kind of described, she reflected on this as being

Something that she saw as like a major part of your childhood and perhaps pushed you in a direction that you went?

How do you extract the lessons

that you had, because your daughter is a high-level hockey player going through.
