Um, I had prior to this tried to write a book and completely failed and then had sort of run away from writing for like five, six, seven years, but I kept my typewriter, my old funky typewriter.

Um and one night I was living in I was driving a cab, I was living in a fli a sublet in in New York City.

And I just got in to this sort of my normal crazy head of like, do I want to go out and get drunk?

Do I wanna go out and chase women?

Do distracting myself one way or another.

Resistance, right?

Resistance, right.

And and I thought I just cannot do this another night.

I've done this so many times.

And so I pulled out my typewriter, thinking.

This is the dumbest thing.

I hate this.

I've tried to do it before.

I've failed at it before.

And the short version is uh, you know, I sat down for about two hours, banged out some crap, didn't mean anything at all, and when it was over, I I went back into the kitchen and there was a table uh a sink full of dirty dishes.

I started washing 'em and I realized that I was whistling.

Which meant to me that I was sane.

You know, that I that for the first it was sort of a mystery why writing before had been torture, but now it wasn't.

And I really I felt like that those two hours grounded me.

So I wasn't crazy anymore.
