Because that foundation has been set and because it isn't completely gone, they're thinking, I can get more.

And I can get more.

And so I think there are things that this administration offers them in terms of tax breaks and lowering regulations that seem attractive for their continued advance.

And in fact, what I try and do in this part of my life is I try and work with companies to get them to understand that as the power architecture of the world has shifted, they have more responsibility than they used to have for not just using the system that was constructed, but being part of its redesign so it's successful.

So I think there's a certain amount of, hey, this is working for me, right?

Right.

I kind of understand the middle companies too, because I think I had a very easy view, very moralistic view of right and wrong when I was in the government.

In the private sector, this issue of shareholder value

And so if they make decisions that cause them to lose business, that cause them to not have funding so that they don't exist, lose employees, lose standing, that is an interestingly different proposition that I had when I was in the government.

I would say, man, that's hard to make that decision, to undermine.

And there's lots of examples where people have gone out of business because they've fallen out of favor.

I wish that they would see that there is far worse in this world than losing everything you have.

What is worse is not having the potential to have more.

And so I guess the people in the middle, I understand and I try and show grace.

But on a really personal level, I would say that I used to believe if you worked hard and did good things, good things would happen.

I no longer believe that.

But I believe if you work hard and do good things, you can live with yourself.

And that gives you one more day.
