And Dolly Parton in this movie was angry.
She was mad as hell, but she was also kind of delightful and charming and had a lightness.
And even a sparkliness to her, and obviously was hyper feminine.
And so that juxtaposition of her values with a look and an aura and a sort of southern charm that we didn't associate with feminism, there was just something very enticing about all of those things wrapped up in this tiny blonde package.
You know, I think, yes, that's true.
And I think that that was part of the power of the movie, not just for me as a dumb 10 year old, but for so many women who, you know, if you ask them, do you believe in equality?
They say, Yes, I do.
And if you asked them, do you believe in fairness?
And do you believe you should get credit for your work?
They would all say yes, but for complicated cultural reasons, felt alienated from the capital F feminist.
Feminist capital M movement or from the women's liberation movement.
And
And kind of for some other reasons that even I, as a little kid, felt sort of threatened by it, you know?
And so the movie was able to bring into the fold a lot of people who just wanted to see women get treated the way they deserved to be treated.
And of course, that's all that feminism ever wanted.
But there was
something just really enveloping about the message that everybody could get behind in that movie.
I don't know if I would have even stopped to reflect on that, but it certainly aligned with, you know, what I knew to be feminist ideals.
As for Dolly herself, I think it really was only with time that I understood the feminist person behind that feminist role, you know.
