a company giving some of its shares to a country?
But doesn't it achieve what you say, which, and I quote from the book, doesn't that give people then a stake in the shared economic future of that country?
Well, I was interested in reading your book in 2026 about some of the things that you were writing over a decade beforehand.
For example, you said that the wages as a share of income have started to go backwards.
You said back then, now it's at the lowest that it has ever been.
You also said that extreme inequality in wealth...
has been largely monetary as a result of extreme credit creation you said back then from now it might be technological here was where I was vehemently agreeing with you and thinking wow how much foresight that you had at the time to see where this could be going so
Do you think that if we were to create a culture of greater equity ownership, and I mean this now from the investing perspective as distinct to the company raising money perspective, that it would genuinely make a difference on both of those measures, the percentage of wealth that one would make from labour and also, sorry, the share of income from labour and secondly, that concentration point?
Now, the last thing I want to ask you is, as I got to the end of the book, you had three clarion calls.
One was more companies raising finance through equity.
One was more people investing in equity.
But the third one you said is that we should cut the cost of bringing the two sides together.
Looking back over that time frame, now that we have exchange traded funds, now that we have practically zero cost of buying and selling shares, do you think that that has been achieved?
Prohibitively so.
And, you know, Andrew, you've just made the case yet again for why the Savings and Investment Union across the European Union and indeed further afield as well in order to make that ecosystem...
just have less friction in it, as well as the ability for assets to find a productive home and so on.
Thank you so much for joining me here on Taking Stock and for taking us through the past 15 years there of economic history, as well as giving us a real insight into what drove the inspiration and what influenced your thinking as you were writing the book.
It's really an excellent read.
It's called The Detonator.
Thank you very much indeed, Andrew McNally, for joining us here on Taking Stock.
