Food, which is fundamental to life, is also the leading cause of avoidable ill health in this country.
In total, the extra costs of obesity to the NHS are almost 10 billion pounds every year.
But actually, that number is quite small compared to the impact that it's having on the wider economy through lost productivity, another 24 billion pounds.

Hello, I'm Susan Jebb.
I'm Professor of Diet and Population Health at the University of Oxford.
I've been working in the field of diet and health for 35 years, longer than I care to remember.
And actually, from the very start, obesity has been seen as the big diet-related health problem.
At that time, back in 1986, only about 12% of adults were overweight.
And I was going around telling people, just look across the Atlantic, you know, what's happening in the States.
We're only 10 years behind.
And that was true.
But sadly, both the US and the UK have continued to go up at a really, really concerning rate.
What really drew me into obesity was initially that it was a metabolic problem, that there had to be, you know, this was some condition, and if we could only fix metabolism, then suddenly it would all go away.
And I was working in a research team which actually did a study, which is now quite famous, which measured people's energy expenditure.
And they showed for the first time, and really conclusively, it was...
