Actually, it was nothing to do with metabolism.
In fact, people who were overweight had higher energy needs than people who were thinner.
In fact, it was all to do with what they ate.
But the people who were overweight tended to underestimate how much they were eating.

People with obesity underreported their food intake by about 800 calories every day.
It became absolutely clear... And that completely reframed the way we thought about this problem.
Suddenly it was an issue of what people ate.
I'd trained as a dietitian, so I thought, oh, hey, this is me, I can sort this.
And I just did not realise that what people eat was so connected into the whole food system.
I was sure it was going to be much easier to change what people eat than to change our metabolism.
But all these years on, I realised I was wrong.
The food system is at least as complicated as our metabolism and far, far harder to fix.
It would prove to be so complicated and would take over my entire career.
Post Second World War, the government asked the food industry to feed the nation and you did it absolutely brilliantly.
But we have also come to see the downsides of these profound changes in the food system for the environment as well as our health.
Over one billion people globally are living with obesity and it's rising fast right across the world.
Our world in data, which is housed at the Oxford Martin School, is doing an incredible job in charting this public health catastrophe.
In the UK, it affects 28% of adults and another 40% are overweight.
That is far too high.
