You know, he was very much an interior person, but he was also very much an exterior person.
intellectually and in many other ways.
A very, very funny man.
And I mean that in the sense of having an amazing sense of humor.
I did not know that about him.
So he's Spanish.
He was born in Malaga, which is a coastal city very close to Africa.
And in many respects, of course, during a key part of Spanish history, it was part of the broader African diaspora with a number of people from North Africa and Southern Africa there.
So he grew up in very much an international community.
He had a grandfather.
The Spanish, of course, were a major empire.
He had a grandfather who lived in Cuba.
At a certain point in his life, he learned that he had Spanish cousins in Cuba who were of African descent.
And so his relationship with Africa and his relationship with the broader diaspora in which his family and in which the world in which he lived was placed is important.
And of course, then he moves from Malaga with his family to Barcelona, and then he makes his way to Paris in 1900.
He has his one...
incredibly fortunate, very young age, had one of his works selected for the 1900 Paris Universal Exposition.
So he finds himself in Paris at that time with a lot of the African and colonial and other representations at that fair.
And so he's got an eye that is taking in everything.
And that's one of the other staggering things about his work is that
