But what happened last Thursday into Friday was much bigger than what we've seen before.

The Spanish authorities are now saying around 65,000 people, they believe, entered at that time.

And of course, they're now saying that most of them have gone back.

Those that survived, of course, because we know there were a lot of fatalities.

So really, the perspective here in Brussels is that this kind of came out of nowhere.

Brussels had been kind of closing down for the summer.

And all of a sudden, these pictures emerged from the region.

And that is why

Over the weekend, there were calls from a lot of EU leaders and from Pedro Sánchez, the Spanish prime minister himself, for this emergency meeting of EU interior ministers to take place today.

That's right.

And I think Spain has been taken aback by the extent of the feeling around this.

So on Saturday, 22 leaders, which is quite a lot out of 27, wrote to the European Commission president and council president and Taoiseach.

in its capacity as chair of the council at the moment, really criticising Spain and taking a very strong line on this, saying that the EU needs to protect its borders.

Now, we're hearing that yesterday there was an ambassadors meeting, all the countries got together ahead of today's meeting, and the Spanish ambassador there really made his point there, saying that they would have expected more solidarity, that Spain is imposing strict border requirements, it's doing what it's supposed to be doing,

And of course, a lot of unanswered questions about how this came about, why now, why it came about.

And of course, the role of Morocco in this.

So I think Spain, as I said, is not happy about the level of feeling.

Now, there has been an attempt yesterday.

We saw another letter by Ursula von der Leyen to express solidarity with Spain and praise Sanchez for what he's done.

So a kind of an effort to impose a sense of solidarity.
