Women's sport has proven, especially in this country, how entertaining it is and the following that it has grown in the last five years has been phenomenal.

So why is there still that reluctance to put money behind it?

That I think is, as Alison says, the elephant in the room.

It's really hard to get into the minds of the people who make these decisions.

But there seems to be this thought that, yes, not as many people are going to go through the gate to watch women's sport as they do for men's sport.

But

With the ANZ Premiership this year, most of the games were sold out.

There was an amazing crowd for the final at Trusts Arena.

While that's a smaller venue than they've played grand finals in the past, it was still heaving.

And we're told that TV audiences for the competition this year have been high.

We don't have those figures yet, but it's been a really interesting time for Netball.

When they lost their deal last year with Sky Sport and then entered into a deal with TVNZ to show the ANZ Premiership free to air this year, what was really happening was Netball New Zealand was dipping into their reserves to pay for that broadcast.

Now, that can't happen again next year because the money is gone from the reserves.

So without a strong broadcast deal, possibly from Sky, it's looking very doubtful that they will be able to have a domestic competition next year.

And it's just unbelievable, really.

Yeah, pretty much it does.

I mean, Netball New Zealand has proven for 20 years that they can host these events.

You know, we saw the ANZ Championship with the Trans-Tasman competition and then going into the ANZ Premiership.

in the last 10 years.

They've proven that they can hold really good competitions that bring people in, that bring people to the TV screens.
