The main reason for that is that you can
strategically plan within that year where you're still working to incur any possible expenses that are going to be deductions against that income.
And then in the following year, from the 1st of July, you might also strategically plan to lock in some capital gains immediately after your taxable employment income stops.
We see that a lot with retirees with property.
So they kind of hold a
plan their retirement and a financial year.
As soon as that financial year is complete, then they can start to think about selling off a property.
Gotcha.
The other thing that often comes up as well is around leave entitlements.
So this one is almost the reverse because if you've got a lot of leave entitlements that have accrued, you might intentionally delay your retirement until just after the start of a financial year because you're going to have that paid out as a lump sum.
I don't typically encourage that because, again, for those reasons discussed previously where we try and organise the rest of our tax affairs to coincide with the financial years.
And the other thing as well is if you've got leave, generally –
Depends on the employer, but generally your best to actually take that leave because you'll get paid superannuation on that time.
Whereas if it's paid out as a lump sum, more often than not, you don't get the super contributions as well.
Yeah, exactly, which can be really significant.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So the more that you can get in there, obviously, the better.
But yeah, the most important thing for me is really just making sure everything else or all of your ducks are in a row rather than trying to time it perfectly according to an arbitrary kind of rule of thumb.
Yeah, that's such a good point.
