I'm talking about the real thing.
How do you make people's lives better?
How do you create a dynamic in this impossible reality and in the tragedy that we face to nevertheless move to a better place and a more positive dynamic?
Things can always be worse or better, and we have every reason to ask how to make it better.
I'm not right now, Dan, having a debate at like Cornell University and wanting to win the debate as to who is more at fault.
That is important, right?
Because it affects Israel's legitimacy and Israel's story.
But I'm not just in the business of debating.
I'm in the business of trying to make people's lives better.
And we all should be.
The discussion can't stop at who do you point the finger at.
You know, Dan, I sometimes make the mistake of reading the comments after we do a podcast.
I don't know if you read your comments too much.
And sometimes I realize that I haven't been clear enough because or else the person writing the comment just wasn't listening.
So I want to start by saying that there are a set of Palestinian responsibilities and a set of Arab responsibilities.
Security is a genuine threat, and I'm not diminishing any of that.
And yet, if you ask what is possible on the Israeli side, it'll obviously be a function of the kind of government we have and the kind of politics it allows.
And as someone who was in government for a very long time, I do tend to ask myself, what does the politics allow as a core question?
I'm not in some fantasy land as to what is required or even right.
The question is, what can you do?
