Hugely famous and popular.
I think perhaps he has the most famous tunes of any composer in the world, barring perhaps Bach.
So his violin concerto, his piano concerto, the Nutcracker Suite, the Sugar Plum Fairy, the 1812 Overture, Sleeping Beauty, which of course we all know from Walt Disney, Swan Lake.
I mean, there is an endless fund of glorious melody and everybody knows them.
Everyone seems to know Tchaikovsky.
They may not know exactly who wrote that, but they'll know the music.
And it goes right to the center of people's souls.
Because Tchaikovsky, more than anyone, I think, poured his heart's blood onto the page.
So when you hear his music, you are hearing his passion poured onto the page.

Yes, it's an old family name, exactly.
And Tchaikovsky?
It actually comes from my great-grandfather, who apparently had an ability to imitate a seagull, which is called a chaika.
And then this SKY, the ski, was added because of his services.
It's an honorific.
It was added as services as a medic in one of the wars that had convulsed Russia at that time.
I forget which.
That's peculiar, but that apparently is where it came from.
