But in Russia, we hadn't yet changed the Gregorian.
We were still in the Julian calendar.
So my birthday in Russia was the 25th of April, 1840.
But according to your calendar, yes.
I think my earliest memory was... I was born in the beautiful town of Votkinst near the Urals, where my father was a mining engineer.
And Votkinst was a kind of Eden.
And I remember when I was very young, looking out of my bedroom window at the swans swimming on the local lake.
It's the earliest memory I have.
I don't know how that lodged in my mind, but obviously came out later in my music.

terrible tendency to bounce from job to job, which meant that far too frequently we had to leave where we were living and rush off to some other part of Russia.
His name was Ilya Tchaikovsky.
He was a mining engineer and he kept trying to get other jobs.
And so when I was very, very young, four or five, he took another job in Moscow.
