A lot of my friends took their lives in the end.
They couldn't face it.
Many people that I knew.
Gosh.
There are always other reasons given, but it seems quite obvious to me that that was the problem.
If you cannot allow your soul to speak in public, what can you do?
For me, the great miracle was music.

They are freedom for the imprisoned soul.

I met much later on a violinist called Josef Koteck, for whom I wrote my violin concerto, one of the most heartfelt pieces I've ever written.

I mean, qualified successes.
Then my next great project, and perhaps my first real enormous success, was I'd written a couple of symphonies.
My first and second and third symphonies were not my best works, but then I began a piano concerto.
I worked extremely hard on it, because with pianists like Anton and Nikolai Rubinstein as my mentors, I couldn't afford any foolish blunders.
I worked incredibly hard on it, and I took it to Rubinstein, as clumsily as my fingers would allow, I played it through to him, and when I had finished...
He said nothing.
