I traveled all over the world, in fact, but I had one marvelous occasion where I was invited to New York to play at a new hall funded by Andrew Carnegie.

They absolutely adored me in New York.

I was more famous in America than in Russia.

And were you enjoying this?

I loved the attention.

I was terrified of the city.

The great skyscrapers frightened me, and I would go to my hotel and whimper in fear at night, although the hotel was a marvelously opulent affair, with all sorts of unimaginable conveniences.

They had a faucet that dispensed real running water, had lights that turned on at the flicking of a switch, and, perhaps most wonderful of all...

A water closet by which one could flush away one's, let us say, least respectable compositions in a great gushing waterfall.

There's nothing amused me so much as pressing down the handle of this marvel over and over again.

I wanted to write a tone poem about it.

I also travelled around Europe.

And I met various people, Gounod, Massenet.

Did you get on well with these people?

Yes, I got on very well with them all.

I also met Johannes Brahms.

And I have to tell you, in all earnestness, that in my estimation, Brahms is without parallel.

He is the most boring composer I know.
