You can feel the fear.

And it was fascinating using art to give people freedom.

And because they were protected by the foreigners at the biennial, and they want to look good and whitewash...

themselves as a non-repressive place, they allowed a little more freedom in work or pretend they didn't see something.

But yeah, after that, they didn't accept me to exhibit any more in Cuba, an institution.

Yeah, because one non-negotiable area is in Cuba, you never mix art with activism.

You never invite dissidents to an artwork, which is what I did in 2009.

A lot of dissidents came and spoke.

But as an artist, you have to say, I have one time to do this, I'll do it properly.

And if I don't exhibit anymore, it doesn't matter.

You know, the work has been done properly.

Then when Obama and Raul decided to have an approach month and opening the relationship, diplomatic relationship, you know, I wanted to test it.

My work is also testing politics.

You know, you say something as politician, I'm going to believe you and I'm going to do it.

And then it will test how real your statement was.

And rightly so.

Immediately they detained me.

They detained 87 more people.

people who didn't even know the work was happening, because there were dissidents who had no idea who I was.
