And at some point you're going to think, do we need the risk?

This is supposed to be feel good fun and suddenly it's turning into a nightmare.

Let's chuck it.

So the third reason to mention is that this has become too party political, all this stuff.

So it's not just about the Supreme Court ruling and the cast review and everything that we've seen, which has made this issue into something which is getting...

headlines and politicians are commenting on.

The fact is that it's actually become party political.

That's what's really, really put them off.

So in 2025, Birmingham, Brighton, Manchester and Pride in London all suspended political party participation with organisers stating, we will not stand by as the dignity, safety and humanity of our trans siblings are debated, delayed or denied.

Now, this came straight after the Supreme Court ruling.

And then PM Keir Starmer's declared support for it.

And so it read as a pointed dig at Labour.

But really, I don't think they were big fans of anybody at that point.

So I think it looks like with hindsight, it looks like quite a serious misjudgment by the Prides.

And it's really backfired.

The reason for that is because paradoxically, it actually underlined the very thing that everyone had been trying to play down, that there is a strong political element to pride.

And that's something big brands will always run a mile from for all sorts of reasons.

There's a second layer to this too.

Pride 2026 happened less than a month after the UK's local elections saw 12 councils switch to Reform UK control, several of which brought in a policy allowing only two flags on council buildings, the Union Jack or the St George's Cross.

So they were saying no to the Pride flag, no to the Ukraine flag, absolutely nothing.
