You try and generally anybody who sells services or products generally knows the name of the game is to try and get them to hand over their money as quickly and easily as possible.
Not for Pride in London, whose own Pride pledge, which is a baseline requirement for any organisation wanting to march, basically asks participants to be proactive on anti-racism, which isn't terribly well defined, gender equality, disability inclusion, gender identity and every part of the LGBT plus community.
So they have to supply evidence of their work across eight separate categories, including sexuality, gender, gender identity, race, age, nationality, disability, religion, and to prove their continuous year-round support for the LGBT plus community, not just a one day appearance, and to demonstrate concrete steps taken to reduce their environmental impact as well.
So if you fail on any of this,
Pride in London can simply reject your application.
And that's before you've even paid your several thousands of pounds for your entry fee and built your float.
I think that in itself will have put a lot of people off because they just don't have that kind of time to spend on this kind of thing, especially if they're also paying.
And I remember when I started looking at the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index and started asking brands whether they were going to be doing that
this year, which was a couple of years ago now, many of them would say, oh, we did it last year.
We're not doing it every year.
We're looking at, you know, how the best spend, you know, it's quite a lot of, you know, spend for us.
We do it, you know, you know, we're looking at resources this year.
So that actually gives them quite a good excuse for not doing it.
But it's also is a genuine reason for not doing it.
It's just too much work.
And for me, it really shows a lack of understanding of their own, of their customers and their customers' priorities and what actually employers are really looking for.
Employers wanted, you know, with the pride stuff, employers wanted a really easy, feel good, frankly, pretty cheap way to stick some rainbows on something for better branding.
Fine.
That was fine when it was all going well.
They don't want a whole load of hassle, a whole load of risk to their brand and to spend money and to have to do all this work in order to be allowed to spend the money.
