And that sort of reasoning is used to justify quietly moving money away from visible sponsorship.
And it may or may not turn up spent on something else internally or more quietly.
When we look at these sorts of language games that they're all playing now, it strikes me as on one level a little bit funny.
I know it's not funny, the whole big picture, but the social justice activists have been brilliant at playing language games for many years.
And it's been through twisting the meanings of certain words that they've been able to make that progress.
And I wonder if on some level, perhaps they finally met their match because now it's the corporations who are doing the gaslighting.
So they'll say things like, we're sunsetting our staff groups.
So lots of those sorts of phrases popping up.
That's the sort of thing they were saying at my event in June when talking about how to depoliticize the workplace.
I can't give examples, obviously, from that event because it was all confidential for them.
But there's a few things that I've seen since then which have really illustrated the point.
So on the 10th of June, The Times quoted a chap called Fernando Fernandez, who's the new CEO of Unilever, which is the owner of Dove, Purcell and Hellman's.
And it's a business that has leaned very hard into social purpose.
as advertising over the years.
And that's also trickled down to them only using advertising agencies who also sign up to all the DEI stuff that they were doing.
Now, that may sound like a whole lot of corporate waffles to lots of people listening, but that's quite a blunt signal that they're going back to doing what customers want and they want to shift products.
So that's a change.
I've got another case study for you as well.
This one came into me privately from a member of staff at Pets at Home, which has actually 16,000 staff working across stores, grooming salons and vet practices.
