So this is what one long-serving employee told me.

I've worked at Pets at Home for many years.

It went from being a friendly place to work to being a place that was captured by ideology.

It seemed to forget what its actual business was, and that business began to fail.

It became very interested in pronouns, constant DEI re-education of staff, bringing in external activist speakers and promoting a trans agenda.

The CEO, Lissa McGowan, left the business with immediate effect in 2025 after a long period of company decline.

The new CEO, James Bailey, has a strong retail background.

A very strident DEI officer also left.

The role was absorbed into HR during a support office restructure where a lot of jobs were lost.

It's a lot more low-key now.

More recently, the company has backed off from activism and reduced the general promotion of ideology.

Involvement in Manchester Pride was apparently cancelled because, although the head office is in Manchester...

we're a national company.

That was the reason Given announced on the company intranet rather than by email.

Business is going better now, which is good to see and maybe not a coincidence.

So that's a good example, I think.

We are generally seeing lots of heads of DEI are leaving big firms and not being replaced.

We're also seeing CEOs with social justice agendas are also being replaced with more business-focused people.

It's funny, actually, I would also put the CIPD in that group.
