They're not wrong, practically speaking.
The problem is unsolvable.
But Jesus already knows what he's going to do.
He's not asking for help because he needs their input.
He's asking because he wants them to see the gap and to feel the impossibility of solving it with human strength and reasoning so that when he fills it, they understand what they're witnessing.
We do the same thing.
We look at what we have.
Maybe it's our finances, our energy, our amount of knowledge, our patience.
And we do the math and we conclude that we're short.
And in our own strength, we always will be.
That's not a failure.
It's actually a creative design by our good creator.
My pastor Dave says it this way.
We've all been created with a God-sized hole in our hearts.
And every day we're going to wake up and we're going to try to fill it either with what it was made for or with something that leaves us even emptier.
So that's our problem.
We are not enough.
But what is Jesus saying is the solution?
After the feeding, the disciples get in a boat to cross to the other side of the lake and a storm comes up and they're straining against the oars.
They're exhausted.
