And then they see someone walking toward them on the water and they're terrified until Jesus calls out.
It is I. Don't be afraid.
And then they reached the shore.
These are two different signs, the feeding of the 5,000 and Jesus calming the storm and getting them across the water.
But they're the same lesson.
Jesus is saying through these signs that he is more than lunch.
He is more than a miracle worker who can calm a storm.
He is sustenance and satisfaction for our souls.
He is God in the flesh.
He is God with us in the boat.
We have a created desire to hunger and thirst, to look out for danger.
And that desire leads us either into relationship with Jesus or into lesser things that we think will protect us and fill us.
There's a theology lesson in what the crowds and the disciples experienced.
The people left full, and Jesus says, I am the bread of life.
The disciples watched the storm obey him, and Jesus says, I am the creator of the world.
He's not just solving their immediate problem, he's telling them who he is.
And we're so tempted to ask, what can I do?
What do I need to do, Lord?
Jesus' surprising answer to the question, trust in him.
