The basic idea is that job seekers will have more information when it comes to negotiating for pay.
In the past, employers pretty much have all the cards.
They can offer as little as they think the employee will take.
And one argument is that that has kind of reinforced some systemic problems with pay disparity, where women and minorities tend to get paid less.
And so what's happening is that instead, employees will have and job seekers will have additional information about what they could earn in different jobs at different companies.
They're pretty big.
In some cases, we have $200,000, $300,000 between the lowest pay number in the range and the highest pay.
For example, a trauma surgeon in Staten Island, it's $384,000 to $810,000.
That's a spread of more than 400 grand.
At other companies, Macy's has a vice president in sportswear, $231,000 and change to $540,000 and change to $309,000 gap.
In some cases, the spread, the multiple between the lowest and highest figures in the range is like two times or even three times.
So it can be quite a range.
Well, you have a number of reasons that have been put forward.
The companies themselves say, in many cases, they want to preserve the option of hiring people who they might not otherwise get if they don't put a very high number in there or being able to pay a lower number.
if they can get somebody for cheaper.
