So there's all kinds of additional pay, and I think employers are kind of highlighting that, even though they might have mentioned it previously in job ads.
Now they're really emphasizing it because they want you to realize, hey, this is an ad, especially in some of these high-end jobs.
You know, we don't really know, right?
There have been some studies about this, but what's clear is that a super wide pay range isn't much different than where we were before these laws, right?
If I go into applying for a job, I probably have some sense of what the market pays, but not a great sense of what this company is paying or what they're envisioning for this role.
At the same time, there have been studies that show that people tend to look at the upper end of the range.
they tend to think they're probably going to land closer to that than the lower end.
So a wide pay range may give people a false sense of hope.
It may muddy the waters for what the employer is actually looking for.
It may make them wade through more job applications, but it also may get a bigger range of applicants who are interested in the job.
you know there's pluses and minuses for employers and for employees but in the end the wider that range is the less useful the information is at the same time it is some information that we generally didn't have before all right so what can a job seeker do to get a better idea of how they would match up with the pay range that in some cases covers so much ground there's a number of things on the one hand you can treat it just like you would have before these rules went into effect right companies for years and years have not included pay ranges for most jobs
And so then what do you do?
You sort of use what you know about the industry.
You call people you might know at the company.
You sort of ask around.
In recent years, you've also had the option of going to places like Glassdoor or most of the big job boards.
I'm pretty sure ZipRecruiter is one of them.
They have salary estimates for a wide range of positions on the site.
And they collect that from ordinary people who are willing to provide jobs.
