Comments here, and I just wanted to read those out just to highlight this tying, and that whoever's going to become the next Fed chair will be very much viewed with a lot of s skepticism about how independent they are, actually, from the White House.
So he said, moreover, about a quarter of the nation's debt is financed through short-term treasuries.
These instruments are acutely sensitive to interest rate hikes.
Keeping rates unnecessarily elevated by 50 basis points means taxpayers face an additional hundred billion in.
Debt service costs over the next decade.
Powers' rigid policies thus impose a double fiscal burden, loss revenues and higher interest payments on current and future generations.
So that's in regards to the level of rates in terms of debt.
But then he also said the level of rates is also dragging down on GDP growth, and that's leading to lost budget revenue.
Loss revenue snowballs into an additional 150 billion to 300 billion added to the national debt.
Powell's stubbornness therefore directly undermines America's fiscal stability.
So uh those two comments I found quite powerful, especially coming from a White House official and explicitly linking monetary policy and uh fiscal policy.
Definitely a mixed picture.
And I I guess uh just in the context of all the trade headlines that are going around, uh with the negotiations between the European Union and the US, I think that will probably dominate sentiment.
I think it's again it's gonna be really contingent on what's going on in the international situation.
So if if w for whatever reason Japan does get hit with a uh
twenty five percent tariff, then that's obviously going to hit uh many industries in Japan, um with some pretty hefty impacts in terms of uh activity potentially and also in terms of uh pricing as well.
Uh there's been a few
No, there's there's there's been a few different analysis of trying to get to the nub of the US at the moment hasn't seen too much inflation from the tariffs that have been put in place so far.
And uh when you talk to when you listen to Fed officials such as the Feds Barkin, who was recently on a podcast of the Wall Street Journal, he was saying a lot of the goods that are being uh sold at the moment in the US came prior to the imposition of tariffs, and it's only the goods that are being sold
say from August that's really going to be including the kind of higher tariff measures.
