In Venezuela itself, the country is still reeling from devastating earthquakes.

And now, sources have told Reuters that delayed orders from senior military commanders and a lack of basic equipment

hampered the response from Venezuelan troops during the critical first days.

Acting President Delcy Rodriguez has vigorously defended her government's handling of the crisis.

But critics say military personnel and other officials arrived too late and did too little to help survivors, with instead civilians spearheading much of the response.

The earthquakes killed about 5,000 people, according to the government.

But experts have said the final death toll could be nearly double that figure.

Venezuela's communications ministry did not respond to a request for comment.

But he says he's been abused online and had his car vandalized after a conversation with a pupil who asked him whether he had voted for the AFD.

Haeckel says he told the people that no, he hadn't voted for the party, partly because Germany's security service classes it as extremist.

Weeks later, he received a formal warning for breaching rules that require teachers to remain politically neutral in the classroom.
