with kind of retail fuel prices, including because of the cut to to the excise uh tax um noticeably lower through through much of April than they were in March. matched

And so that supported a bit of a f fallback in in fuel spending. matched

But beyond that, um there's also a dynamic that we saw of some put you know potential stockpiling or pull forward in in food demand, which supported March, which which unwound um in in April and dragged down that number. matched

The other key theme beyond fuel and food is what's happening in in travel. matched

And as you say, that is kind of driving some some noticeable weakness. matched

That was quite a drag in in the month. matched

We're a little cautious about what the implications of that are in terms as an indicator of kind of a broader uh discretionary demand story for households, though. matched

And the reason for that is uh um refunds in in air travel in particular are are still fairly elevated. matched

relative to history. matched

And so it could be that those disruptions to to travel plans um from the from the start of of this shock are still playing out in that data a little bit. matched

And I think when you look beyond travel, what we're seeing is a story that is kind of consistent with some slowing, but certainly resilience um in discretionary consumption. matched

And so when you look at things like, you know, restaurant meals, for instance, that was that was okay in in in the month of April. matched

And you know, we're not we're not seeing as noticeable matched

pullback across the broader discretionary complex as that kind of travel indicator in p um alone suggests. matched

Uh so there, the the budget um reply speech from from the opposition later, the kind of you know, we saw saw that last night and the the key thing there was a a proposal to to index those tax brackets to it to inflation to to protect against bracket creep. matched

Um and then you know there was also you know some other policies, higher higher defense spending, some and link of of migration to to housing supply, um, you know, opposing those some of those tax reforms. matched

that were that were um in the budget uh this year um and also kind of a a higher um threshold for the the instant asset asset write off but kind of the you know the major uh you know tax policy announcement from from the opposition um in in their reply was was that kind of indexation of of tax brackets. matched
