Yeah, the sharing economy was definitely something that was sort of having its heyday then.
There was Uber and Airbnb as well in particular.
So that concept of how we can use the resources that we've already got was definitely pretty top of mind.
One of my biggest learnings of having been on the entrepreneurial journey is that from the outside in, it's very easy to assume that everything's a really smooth journey sort of up and to the right and you take these big leaps and take these big bets and then massive success follows.
In our experience, it's been the exact opposite.
The very first thing that Sasha and I did was to research the problem of food waste to find out if it was any bigger than my personal experience.
And what we discovered absolutely blew our brains.
We couldn't believe this wasn't on the front page of every newspaper because we learned that globally a third of all the food we produce each year gets thrown away, which is worth over a trillion dollars.
And then the environmental impacts of food waste are absolutely devastating.
So if it were to be a country, food waste would be the third largest source of greenhouse gas emissions after the USA and China.
The market research galvanized us to take the next step.
And what we did was we created a WhatsApp group and we invited a bunch of people.
They all lived near one another.
And for two weeks, we said, if anyone's got any spare food, there might be someone living locally who would like it.
Someone posted our first listing, which was half a net of shallots.
