Because even something like the period at the end of a word, okay, can be interpreted in a million different ways.

Is someone trying to be too abrupt?

You know, what exactly is that signaling?

And so they're constantly learning and trying to read into that stuff.

And that's where they're putting their effort in communication.

Then they show up at the workplace and like none of that stuff matters.

And their boss is thinking...

How come you just can't on the fly negotiate with me?

Well, it's because they learned how to read periods and ellipses and things like that.

That's where all that effort was going in their childhood, in their early years, instead of learning how to do the face-to-face stuff.

Oh yeah, negotiation, cooperation, all of those things, and perspective taking.

I think that's another huge one of thinking through a situation through multiple perspectives, what this person is thinking, what that other person's thinking, and dealing with what scientists call attributional ambiguity.

Any situation can be interpreted in a million different ways.

Younger generations, and actually all of us to some extent, usually see it through the lens of ourselves individually.

And we have a really hard time seeing what it looks like through the lens of anybody else.

Kind of the classic example is someone stole my idea at work, right?

Or, you know, someone interrupts me all the time at work.

When you're really myopic that way, relationships shake that out of you because you're sort of forced to take other people's perspectives.

And if you don't, you get dumped quite a bit.

You know, you don't really last very long.
