Yeah, so I was an early childhood teacher before I moved into primary.
And what we know, those first five years are so important.
And the early childhood teachers will have spent a lot of time with those children and they know them really well.
We will always email parents and say, tell us about your child.
But I think it's really valuable, if we can, to go into the centre, see the child in that environment where they feel safe and they feel settled with people that know them well.
It's not always easy to do.
We have a huge number of centres that feed into us, but we have centres that we get a lot of children from.
So we've worked hard to get those connections going with those centres.
Yes, but it is what I think is lovely is when I walk into your centre, it's almost like I'm a rock star.
Everyone's like, Mrs. Canlop.
The connection is there so you don't have to spend a long time in there for those children to feel they know you and that then passes on to the school as well because there's this pride of going to Willow Park School and that's where my siblings are and they make those connections.
So we are a larger school.
We've got around about 660 children, really diverse cultures from all over the world, and that's probably become increasingly so in the last few years, which has been great.
There is a number of children who are neurodiverse as well, and that's where some of the learning that we do, the structured literacy, and that works really well for those children as well.
And as I said, we have children from a wide range of centres.
We'll have them from our local area, but also where parents are working in the city, they might have their child in a centre there.
So often parents will be worried that their children won't know anyone because that's the only child from that centre.
But some of the things that we do help to build those bonds quite quickly.
And often there's many children who come to school and don't know another child in the class.
Yeah, and for the parents, because I think that parents are anxious anyway about their child going to school, and they have lots of questions, especially if they haven't actually experienced New Zealand schooling.
