And we passed each other on the streets with knowing looks, having full conversations without speaking a word.

We understood how we felt.

And I don't want people to misunderstand that, to think, oh, Black women were just walking around getting their nails done.

We were moving in strategic silence.

Because our wisdom was not received during the election, we spoke only to ourselves at that time and thought, how can we build and create shelter?

But even beyond that, Dawn,

You know, I think when we talk about black women, we're particularly when it comes to politics, we're talked about as a political commodity.

So I didn't want to write some political autopsy after the election.

You know, black women are the backbone of the Democratic Party or the backbone, the vertebrae in the bones of America or the 92 percent.

But I think what was missed from the conversation is beyond that, we are.

breathing, thinking, seeing, feeling people.

And beneath all of these monikers, there is a bleeding, breaking heart.

Our hearts were broken.

And it wasn't broken just because Donald Trump took the White House.

He's not the first white supremacist in the White House.

And at this rate, he likely won't be the last.

Our hearts were broken because at a moment that

We have poured so much of ourselves into our careers, our country and our companions.

It seemed like everybody collectively was giving the middle finger to us and we needed to be held.

And so I wrote this book at a time when my show was canceled.
