So perhaps our expectations of friendship might be different from place to place.
But one of the things I think is helpful is to remember that everyone has different friendship styles and sets of expectations and that friendships can take quite different forms.
And so when you're negotiating a friendship, you have to be aware of those different styles that people are coming into a friendship with.
Yeah.
People are worried a lot, actually, about their friendships.
I get a lot of emails.
I have a lot of conversations with people about friendship.
And they say, I'm worried.
I don't have the right kinds of friends.
I don't have enough friends.
I don't know how to make friends.
And we're not actually noticing always all the different kinds of unsung friendships that we have in our lives.
So with the other dog walkers who we see regularly,
most mornings and, you know, always have a chit chat with or with our neighbours or with people at work who we're used to seeing every day.
So I think there's a chance that we might be overlooking all these smaller yet very significant forms of friendship in our life.
So there's a good bit of research that suggests that every seven years we renew about 70% of our friendship group, which was a real surprise to me.
So it's actually very common that we have... That's a lot of churn.
It's actually quite common, therefore, to have quite transient friendships.
Our expectation that we've got the same solid group of friends for an entire life might be a bit of a misnomer, actually.
It doesn't seem to be how people's friendships work.
