Tending fruit in the back fields.
Our plantings raised healthy families and good, strong homes.
And if I have it my way, it'll keep doing that long after they put me under one of those fields.
Of course, digging holes around these parts can be a mite risky.
Or at the very least, a little nerve-wracking.
and I'll be sure to tell my kinfolk to lay me down on the west side of the property, far away from that well over yonder on the east orchard.
And that gets me to where you'll be wanting me to go, Mr. Tinsdale, because it was that very well where it all started.
Or at least, where it started for me.
I wasn't the first of the Stills clan to reckon with the strangeness that goes on around here.
Or under here, as it were.
As far back as that long line of stills I told you about, and I'd wager further still, folks have been hearing all manner of strange things beneath the dirt, and once in a while, atop it.
Like what, you ask?
Like what my granddaddy Mortimer Stills met one dark night out in the pear orchard.
To the day he died, he swore up and down that what he saw was real, and no trick of the moonlight, or moonshine for that matter.
Grandma Penelope had been hearing footsteps and rustling out there near every evening for a fortnight, so Granddaddy went to make sure no strangers were about.
Well, once he got back there, sure enough, he heard a racket like some big animal was hurt or worse, fixing to pounce.
He gripped his rifle in one hand, raised his lantern in the other, and looked to see what kind of beast he might be tangling with.
but what he saw weren't no beast, not by a damn sight.
It was a man, and as granddaddy always put it, a man as big and handsome as any he'd ever seen in books, carved from stone, or sung about.
