Said the fella had eyes brighter in a clear July afternoon, and by that he meant they glowed.
Course, granddaddy didn't know what to make of him.
Truth be told, he was downright terrified, and not just because of the man's size.
There was something about him.
Something that made the hair rise on your neck.
Granddaddy said the man laid a hand on his shoulder and told him to be at peace and not fear.
And the moment he did, granddaddy felt a strange calm settle over him.
But it lasted only a second.
Because right after that, he saw what had been making all that caterwauling.
The big, beautiful man was holding a chain, using it to drag a great big iron cage covered in a black cloth.
And under that cloth, captured inside that cage, was something alive.
Granddaddy thought it was a wild beast at first.
No sooner had the man noticed him staring than he turned and walked into the woods, pulling that cage behind him.
And just before he disappeared, the lantern light caught the edge of the cage where the wind lifted the cloth.
And there it was, the head of a creature that weren't no man and weren't no animal neither.
It was leering at granddaddy like it meant to tear his eyes clean out and eat him for supper.
Now, maybe he'd have gotten over it if that had been the end of it.
But it weren't.
Not by a long shot.
Every now and then, the whole family would hear the ruckus of monsters and the sound of something big being dragged through the breaks and brambles.
