Come morning, there'd be fresh tracks through the woods, across the thickets, and down into the hollers where the hills folded into ruts and caves, places we all knew better than a trespass.
The worst came later.
After the tracks faded and the late-night howling became a distant memory, sounds started rising up from the earth itself, and nowhere were they clearer than at that old well on the eastern slope.
It was as if whatever was happening below was being funneled through that brick well, the way a tune runs through a flute.
Only the tune was made of screams.
And still, that weren't the worst of it.
Threaded through those screams was the sweetest music ever played above or below the earth, beautiful beyond telling, clearer than any screech or cry.
Terrible all the same.
The most terrible beauty you ever did hear.
And that's the same sound that got trapped in that machine my nephew brought and set beside that old shunned whale.
Because those screams never stopped.
Not after my granddaddy was laid in the ground.
