With Kansas Reflector today is Cynthia Lane, Director of the Blueprint for Literacy.
Welcome to our podcast.
It's good of you to take the time to be here.
Mm-hmm.
It may seem obvious to people, but why do you think it's important for Kansas to invest tax dollars in developing reading skills among young people?
Yeah, participate in society fully.
You're a former public school superintendent in Kansasity, Kansas, and you've seen ramifications of reading deficits firsthand.
Do you wanna help us understand what that looks like?
do you think some kids can't read well through no fault of their own?
It's not about want to.
Okay.
So help us get a little bit more into the finer print of statistically where Kansas schools stand.
I think there's a national uh testing that's done that that gives us some sort of footing in terms of where Kansas stands.
Yeah, that's the fifty five percent you spoke of earlier and that's that is alarming.
I just would have never guessed the numbers were that bleak.
but you're also pointing the fact that this is a this crisis in literacy is broader than Kansas.
Kansas is isn't the only state that has struggled with this.
It's kind of across the board.
All right, so before we get into exactly what the Blueprint for Literacy is doing, what the fine pieces of those puzzle that puzzle is, just can you articulate what the goal is for students generally?
When people learn about what you're doing, hear about what you're doing, they should keep in mind the goal.
