So Laura and Putnam's friendship runs through the novel Honest.
It's first person from Laura's perspective.
They're never particularly affectionate with each other as friends.
Putnam's life in the literati or in the magazine publishing world has been taken a blow by the double blow of his father dying, which appears to have really shaken him.
But also a new editor comes in to the fray with the magazine that they work for, who's a very brash journalist.
He wants to change the style of the magazine from a very English magazine.
He wants to turn it into, as he says, he wants to turn it into the New Yorker.
So there's a bit of a cultural beating of heads, this new style of editor disrupting this decades-old style
rhythm of the magazine.
Then we go a lot into Laura's upbringing and it's quite abrupt when it happens.
That's the sudden going back to Laura's, the way she grows up, her relationship with her mother and her rather estranged father.
And these, quite frankly, one of the most disgusting chapters I've ever read in a book ever about Laura's, it's an assault really by a comedian as a very young woman
and other romantic relationships in her life.
And then we go back to her relationship with Putnam.
And as Kate said, nothing much happens.
A lot of crisps.
Yeah.
Always when I don't connect...
particularly with the book, and I read this three times because I wanted to give it the respect it's due, and I always will presume that there's something I'm missing.
And I was sat outside the pub a couple of weeks ago and this word consequences came into my head.
