Kudos to a writer who can show, not tell, that these experiences have informed the character of Laura as why she is like she is and appears to be quite disaffected.
I mean, there's no talk about the consequences of that.
what happens to her.
Now, that frustrated me, but maybe I'm just missing that she is showing and not telling.
When reading reviews, which I only read after reading a book, we'll say, look, nothing much happens, but the writing is spare.
And I go, okay, there are lots of books where nothing much happens and done well and that you do feel really warm and engaged.
No, not warm, but involved.
I mean, you don't need to feel warm.
I was battling with this over these Pascal Bloys because I hated some of these, well, pretty much all the male characters so much.
Putnam is quite charming and the descriptions are not so adoring that he's a real person.
You can see him for foibles and also his charms.
But I'm thinking because when I've been in book clubs before and folks will say, I hated this character so much and I hate this book.
And I'll say, but is that character described well?
Is it written well?
You don't have to love every character in there.
And so for the past couple of weeks I've been thinking, is because I hate some of these characters so much, is that just that they're well written, well described?
I mean, you don't need to love every bloody character you read.
I did both, two times read on page and one on audiobook.
