And its starting point is Paul Simon's album Graceland and the complications with using South African musicians and that heritage and goes into the history of South African music and then conflates somehow with the history of Cuban music.
And so it's coming through, I don't know if Indigenous is the right term, but going through cultures and their musics and how they get appropriated, often not bad, not well at all, by Western musicians.
For example, with Cuban music, he doesn't start at something like Buena Vista Soulja Club.
He goes right back.
to the 19th century and why particular instruments are used in Cuban music because of their accessibility and the cost, and then how Dizzy Gillespie used a percussion player from Cuba and it changed jazz forever and Afro-Cuban jazz became such a thing.
So I'm listening and reading that and trying not to buy 100 flippin' records a day because everything I hear, I need to hear this music.
So I'm listening to nothing but late 60s and early 70s South African music and then Afro-Cutie and jazz from the 20s, 30s and 40s, and I'm just in heaven.
It's so great.
