What I love about Max's music writing as well as this novel is that

It's not a book about music.

The music's kind of is somehow central to it, but

He's not writing about this pursuit up a ladder.

This is about communities that make a bloody ladder.

and invite everyone to jump in.

And b so many books about music are about oh the ladder and the scene and that you you weren't there, so you won't know.

But this is written in two uh it's about two thousand and twenty four, so it's now time and about Gaza protests and really what it's about.

But there's uh

the character that proposes that, because he's living in this sharehouse with his friends, he he won't stand on a soapbox and say, You're wasting your time.

You can feel his on we towards toward definitely towards protest and about the do-it-yourself scene as a propulsive force.

which in interviews with Max uh he's very honest about because I think in any do-it-yourself operation it's exhausting.

And uh w a really interesting adjunct, Helen goes on

A trip to Italy.

And she doesn't go there visiting ruins.

She goes there to hang out with members of the do-it-yourself punk community in Italy.

And in reading a subsequent interview with Max, he's fascinated by how the Italians have had these squats that that have existed and venues for decades.

Helen goes on this trip and comes home and says, actually, look, this is possible, and it's not
