And um I don't think it's a Sydney thing at all.

And why does this Italian experiment work and why would a writer from Western Sydney think that Melbourne is different?

Uh The Tree of Man by Patrick White was given to me in ninety four as the apex of Australian writing by my mum before I went to go and live in New York for a while.

And uh I enjoyed it.

I read it again recently and it didn't um have the same effect on me.

But we used to live near Patrick White as kids out in Castle Hill before um he and Manilee moved to the parklands in in the middle of Sydney and it was kind of um he was important to our lives anyway.

Parker and um and that's how I first learnt Shickard and I've been following the Shickard line ever since.

Uh second one, um Heather Rose's Museum of Modern Love.

Just a context well I could as a novel, because it introduced me to Marina Arabovich and also the nature of creating art and being uh tr kept apart from the one you love and using music and using art to sublimate

a hell of a lot of ache and a angst and pain and anger.

Uh so s something about that resonated with me.

And then I was with Heather and Sophie Laguna at this festival in Perth when just when Museum of Modern Love was to be released and we had a grand all time, it was

Being with those authors at that time was really, really important to me and an enduring friendship.

And to check in with these people, um, I feel very, very blessed.

Just the same as when I'm travelling the world and people coming up to me and asking me about the bookshelf.
