He knocked her out and then he put her in the passenger seat of the car and then he drove the car into the pond.
That's how it worked.
So the observer, the witness, saw the car going over a hill and into the pond but didn't see what happened to her beforehand.

Well, I mean, it's an argument that could have been made, all right.
But in the end, they really needed to solve that crime, and Steve was the way they could solve it.
So he was able to make that arrangement with them that he didn't go to jail.
And he was a lucky man in that sense.
