And a lot of modern day evangelicalism is centered on total depravity.
Like we are all broken.
We are all in need of a savior.
And so it just plays on that and says, yes, that is true.
And you especially, because you're struggling with your sexuality.
And they use a lot of Bible verses, like when Jesus says to deny ourselves and follow him.
And so there was a lot of that language all throughout, but also just this whole idea that like,
You're the result of your trauma.
It's not nature versus nurture.
Like you're not born that way.
You learn your way into this behavior.
It's because your dad was distant or your mom was overbearing or you were into more stereotypically female hobbies than male.
And they try to pathologize those things that make you queer.
Exactly.
I was a huge musical fan.
And like, no, that's not natural.
Like, you need to like what guys like.
And so it would pathologize all of those things and say, you know, the way to healing is to embrace, you know, the good things.
And so it was always presented as you have this choice.
And I think the biggest thing is that there was never room for us to say that there was something wrong with the program.
