Everyone's an expert in everything.
And suspending your disbelief
is harder now.
Like, writers have to get it right.
You know, I think... Especially with Tina, because she's really, you know, knows exactly what's going on with that investigation.
I just think in thrillers decades ago, writers, you know, had a certain amount of leeway, let's say, to get away with things.
And I don't think that's the case anymore.
They are not mutually exclusive, but it is a bias that exists.
When I was getting ready for the podcast today, I went back to look, for example, to see if P.D.
James or Ruth Rendell had ever been shortlisted for a booker.

James one time was on a shortlist.
Like the two greatest crime writers of like the 80s and 90s and not a single nod.
True.
And John Banville, when he started writing thrillers, used an assumed name.
But now he's reverted back to John Banville, which is kind of great, right?
It is kind of great.
But, you know, the whole idea that it was somehow lesser than, so he wasn't going to publish them under his name.
