What made them change their mind and finally accept you to come on as an apprentice?
In a sense, a very good way to start to kind of familiarize yourself with the world and kind of improve the language skills, get to know the area, because I was new coming from an island, suddenly being downtown Osaka is also... And I think a lot of Japanese apprenticeships or shugyo go this way, right?
When you start out with this kind of trial and you help out with the organization of the studio, at what point do they say, okay, we'll take you on a proper apprenticeship?
Was there like a sort of contract that you could actually sign at the time that was like, okay, you're going to be an official tattoo apprentice and get a certificate after that?
What was in place or how did it work at the time?
Before going in there, you were starstruck a little bit.
You were dreaming about doing that.
Suddenly you have those first couple of years that are very difficult, where you're basically the kohai of everyone and they just tell you to do all the dirty work.
It can be stressful as well, the language and everything.
What made you persist or was there moments where you're like, do I really want to do this here?
Maybe I should do something else artistic in Japan.
So... So Wataru taking you on on his apprenticeship was kind of like, oh, maybe the turning point of things a little bit.
So I wanted to get to that.
You start apprenticeship by doing this kind of trial running the shop.
Then you get taken under Wataru's wing.
And he basically adds to your task to do a lot of these flashes and do a lot of illustrations and drawings.
how much later do you start learning and practicing how to actually ink someone?
Yeah, to kind of get the balance.
