What was your original interest into starting to work and research on tattoos?
What are you talking about?
It's interesting, the entire convention for female tattoo artists and women that have gotten tattoos in 2006, when you said it was peaking, there's maybe one of these first misconceptions, or not a misconception perhaps, about how taboo the tattoo is in Japan.
But they still have conventions about it.
What was the perception then, the social perception of the tattoo at the time?
You said it's changing now and maybe even getting worse.
What is exactly changing?
Maybe what is the cause of that change too?
Which is interesting because I do recall slightly before the Olympics, there was a push and a little bit by the Japanese government.
Be aware, there might be a lot of foreigners coming to Japan that have tattoos.
We need to maybe adjust the rules, make it accessible without enforcing anything, but kind of trying to communicate that maybe the ryokan or the onsen or the sento or the beaches would be more open to that.
But it seems like it's not the case.
And you get interested.
And 20 years later, you're still writing about it, releasing a fourth book on the topic.
What is it about the craft itself that kind of really got you hooked, that you wanted to understand more, and that you want people to understand more as well?
Because that's, I imagine, why you write about it.
Historically speaking, though, I read some bits and pieces.
It was used to mark people in Japan, criminals.
