These are the things I did that helped the company in ways that you may not see.

This is some of the culture value added things that I did.

This is how I participated in programs and committees that exist within the organization.

And when you start to lay out a case versus just asking for something, it really sends a clear message, A, that this isn't an emotional twitch to try to get more money, and B, that you've actually contributed beyond just your regular job and what you're doing.

Yes, there's no doubt about it.

You have to understand how

your boss and human resources and finance as well as the company overall ebbs and flows.

If you're in the finance department, the accounting department, to go in and ask for more money in the first week of the month when they're closing out the books from the previous month, it's probably not the best time to ask.

Or when you're coming into quarterly earnings and people are getting ready to file their 10Q and to look at that kind of stuff, it's not the best time.

So to really look and see how's the business doing,

Where's your manager's state of mind?

and to make a strategy for how you're going to go about doing it.

Remember, when you negotiate a salary, it's not a one-time thing.

This goes into perpetuity with your employer every two weeks, every month, every year for the future.

And that adds up to hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars over the course of a career.

So approach it like that.

Take it seriously.

Yeah, there's a real fine line between being confident and being cocky.
